This 3D printed design was created out of personal necessity. Given that I was devoting a huge amount of time and effort to training in the sport of sprint kayak, I needed an optimal solution for using a GPS watch while paddling as it is not feasable to check my wrist.
There were a handful of other designs already on the market that I could have chosen from, however, all of them relied on suction cups to keep the mount attached to the carbon fiber boat.
Looking for a permanent solution that would not have a chance of losing suction and falling off, I turned to GoPro and their system of mounting cameras. GoPro offered an excelent solution as their system allowed the base of the mount to stay semi-permanently glued to the boat with materials that are intened for prolonged sun and weather exposure.
My design takes advantage of GoPro's existing system of mouting hardware and connects to it via a compatible joint in the design.
Starting as a highschool project, this mount went through several prototypes before settling on the final design. The final design minimized the size of the printed object while maximizing it's strength and usability.
The final design has been through over 3 years of daily training and still offers the same reliability that it was designed for.
